Australia Student Visa

An Overseas Student Programme is operated by the Australian Government, allowing people who are not permanent residents to study there. The visa you will need will depend on the level of course you are studying.

Subclass 570 - For those wishing to study English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

Subclass 573 - A visa for higher education leading to a bachelor or associate degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma.

Subclass 574 - For those wishing to study a masters degree or a doctorate.

Visa application process:

For the majority of Individual students enrolling for academic studies in Australia, the visa type is Subclass 570. The following steps are to be followed for visa application:

  1. A Subclass 500 Student Visa currently costs around AU$575, but you should check the Home Affairs website to ensure the price hasn’t changed and also to check if you are exempt from the charge.
  2. Proof of your acceptance onto an approved course in Australia.
  3. Proof of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) if required
  4. Evidence of AUS$20,290 per year for living expenses

Scholarships

Scholarship to Study in Australia for Indian Students:

As well as scholarships offered by individual universities, there are also schemes which are offered by the Australian government as well as private organisations.

Australian Government Research and Training Program (AGRTP): Funded by the Australian Government, it covers a student’s tuition fee and health insurance for up to three years. Supports a student’s (local and international) Research Doctorate and Research Master’s degree.

Destination Australia: This scholarship aims to encourage international students to study in regional Australia to regionally develop tertiary education providers in Australia and provide a learning experience to its students. The value of the funding is up to $15,000 for each scholarship, yearly to study at the campus from 202. It’s funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and is in line with the National Strategy for International Education 2025.

John Allwright Fellowship (JAF): Provides scientists from partner countries engaged in the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) research projects with the opportunity to obtain postgraduate qualifications at Australian tertiary institutions. It provides PhD and master’s scholarships on an annual basis to agricultural researchers and administered through the Australia Awards system.

Australia Awards: Funded by the Department of Education and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT). Aims to provide students from developing regions an opportunity to pursue their UG/PG program at participating universities in Australia and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Accommodation

There are plenty of accommodation choices available to you whilst you study in Australia after 12th but, unlike other countries, there is very little accommodation provided by the university, meaning that most students will live off-campus in shared rental properties, homestays or hostels. Most universities will encourage international students to arrive in Australia 2-3 weeks before their course starts in order to get settled. Study in Australia cost for Indian students can be relatively high along with the augmented cost of living expenses. You can expect your living expenses to be on average AU$20,000 per year.
